On 15 January 2005 I grabbed my Canon 20D digital SLR camera and drove from Berkeley to Mount Diablo for a little ramble. I usually notice the first signs of spring in urban areas in the middle of February. Hiking on the east side of Mount Diablo after numerous storms have dumped many inches of rain on the mountain, it was easy to notice the early signs of spring in the middle of January. Many native and wild plants benefited from the moisture and the temperate climate, and were showing signs of new life.
